Punching Up was an exhibition bringing together works that used comedy to critique those in power. For this exhibition, I showed three drawings that took white men from Western history and played off of their names as pun images: Freud Chicken, Sockrates, and Philip Broth.

Suit Yourself: The George Sand Story in C Major (Arcana) illustrates 21 moments from the life and work of George Sand, a 19th century French novelist and gender-variant provocateur, as told through the Major Arcana suit of Tarot. The Major Arcana represents the journey of the fool, used here as a non-linear narrative arc to challenge the de-queered biographical construction of George’s genderfluidity. George’s situation into the tradition of tarot is inspired by their spirituality and use of personal symbolism. Sand’s novels were naively understood by French readership to be tabloids thinly concealing personal gossip, only with changed character names. Perhaps this was intentional on Sand’s part, in order to sell more books, and therefore to secure financial independence from male lovers. George is known to have romanced Romantic era artists such as Alfred de Musset, Frederic Chopin, Franz Lizst, and Jules Sandeau.
